TRAVEL TIPS

Gay and Lesbian Travel

New Orleans has a large gay and lesbian population throughout the metropolitan area. The most gay-friendly neighborhood is the French Quarter, followed by the Faubourg Marigny, just outside the Quarter. Most bars for gay men are located in these neighborhoods; lesbians may have to head to bars on designated Girls’ Nights, such as the one held Thursday at the Country Club, in Bywater.

Throughout the year there are a number of gay festivals. The biggest is Southern Decadence, held Labor Day weekend. The city also has gay-friendly guesthouses and B&Bs, particularly along Esplanade Avenue.

Ambush, a local newspaper published twice monthly, provides a list of current events in addition to news and reviews. You can find this publication at many gay bars.
